Welcome to the Narrative, Trauma & Resilience Lab website

The Narrative, Trauma & Resilience Lab, directed by Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach, has been operating out of the Psychology Department of Bar-Ilan University since 2003.
The main focus of the research in our lab is identity - with relation to gender, illness and trauma - and its development throughout the life cycle. We use quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies, with an emphasis on the use of the narrative as a central tool in the study of identity. Studies in the lab focus on narrative construction and reconstruction processes in coping with major events and and turning points in life.

Research in the lab addresses a variety of topics:

Picture
  • Psychological responses to trauma and stress, including resilience and growth
  • Trauma narratives and trauma testimonies, and their relationships with PTSD and well-being
  • Psychological aspects of motherhood
  • Women's mental health, and gender differences in coping with trauma
  • Emerging adults and the development of identity
  • Narratives and identity changes in the face of illness

The studies in the lab are conducted with the help of psychology students from the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as students from the Graduate Program for Gender Studies at Bar-Ilan University. To learn about research collaborations with other researchers, click here.

Prof. Tuval-Mashiach has been involved in contributing to the development of  the field of Qualitative Methods in Psychology, in Israel and internationally, with a particular focus on narrative theory and methodology.
